What is Hypertension?
Hypertension, often referred to as high blood pressure, is a common health condition where the force of the blood against your artery walls is consistently too high. There are a few potential causes for high blood pressure, including dietary and lifestyle choices, and underlying conditions including thyroid problems or kidney disease. Other risk factors include age, family history, and weight.
Consistently high blood pressure can lead to serious health concerns if it is not managed effectively. Over time, hypertension can cause the arteries to harden and thicken, leading to a heart attack or stroke. It can also result in other complications like kidney disease and heart failure.
There are four different types of hypertensions, each of which is characterized depending on its severity. The two most severe stages include stages 1 and 2. Stage 1 hypertension involves the blood pressure reading 130-139/80-89 and stage 2 hypertension involves the blood pressure reading 140 or higher/90 or higher. Despite its potential severity, hypertension can be controlled with the right medical treatment and lifestyle changes.
Signs and Symptoms of Hypertension
High blood pressure is often called a “silent killer,” as there are very few and subtle symptoms associated with high blood pressure levels. Many patients can have high blood pressure for several years without exhibiting any symptoms.
Although there are very few signs and symptoms of high blood pressure, these signs and symptoms include:
- Frequent headaches
- Shortness of breath
- Frequent nosebleeds
We understand that these symptoms are vague. Because of this, it is recommended that patients get their blood pressure checked often to ensure they remain in good health. In the event you do find your blood pressure is elevated, do not panic. Simply call our office at (601) 892-3063 and request an appointment with one of our expert providers.
Diagnosis and Treatment
Diagnosing your high blood pressure is as easy as one of our providers taking your blood pressure measurement. In the event your blood pressure is elevated, or within the ranges for stage 1 or stage 2 hypertension, your provider will provide you with a comprehensive treatment plan to reduce your blood pressure and return it to a normal range.
Your high blood pressure treatment plan may involve a combination of medication management and lifestyle modifications including smoking cessation, limiting alcohol intake, losing weight, and/or eating a heart-healthy and reduced sodium diet. It is important you talk to your provider about your treatment options during your private appointment.
